Meet Ativo Skincare

Can you tell us about yourself?
My name is Tracy Castro, CEO and Creative Director of Ativo Skincare. I am an East Coast transplant that moved to the west coast 24 years ago. I am a Taurus who definitely lives up to its reputation of being strong willed and loves an intelligent conversation. I am a die hard 80’s music fan and Spotify runs on my phone about 12 hours a day! I cannot go a day without rocking out to some alternative 80’s classics. I love to read when I have time. At one point I was reading close to a book a week.

What inspired you to start your business?
Ativo Skincare was created by my 13 year old daughter who had a severe case of cystic acne. She was introduced to a Beauty Blogger who spoke to her about the importance of introducing natural ingredients to her face care regimen. After lots of reading and research she started formulating her own products. Friends and family started to notice a difference in her skin, and asked what we were doing. Several of them asked to try the products for themselves so we contacted Health Canada to have our formulations approved. From there we created our company, and it’s been thriving ever since!!

What is your goal with Ativo Skin Care?
I want Ativo Skincare to be known as a go to natural skin care boutique brand. We will continue to manufacture using small batch processing and making quality control our number one goal. Turning exotic ingredients into formulas that are healthy so your skin will be the very best it can be.

If you had one week to escape, where would you go and what would you do?
I would love to escape to a retreat, a Vipassana Meditation Retreat. When your a creative person your mind is running 24/7. I often find myself at 3am writing my ideas down and researching the possibilities. It seems my mind is never is slow down mode. Vipissana Meditation is an ancient Indian meditative practice that was adapted by the Buddah. It’s goal is to come as close to nature as you can to see things as they really are. To be one with myself and nature in complete solitary confinement is not only scary to me but a fear I would love to one day over come.

Tell us about your favourite or most popular product and why?
My most favourite product is my Glow Facial Oil. For many years I used lotions and creams on my face, only to find that they made my skin worse. I have eczema and psoriasis so finding a product that doesn’t make my skin burn or break out into a horrible rash was like finding a needle in a haystack. That’s when I turned to face oils. Our formula uses exotic ingredients like Camellia seed oil to help bring moisture to the skin, Rose Hip Oil to fight the appearance of scars, and aging, evening primrose to help with eczema dryness. This oil has been a game changer for me. I no longer have to apply my moisturizer multiple times in a day. My skin feels healthy and moisturized

What does the term “self-care” mean to you?
Self care for me encompasses so many aspects for me, from eating healthy nutrient dense foods, exercising, to time with my family and friends. These past few years I have spent a lot of time and effort on making sure everyone at home was taken care of that I was forgetting about me. In January, my girlfriends and I made a promise to one another that we would all make more time for each other more. Beginning in January we have spent almost every Friday, having pot luck dinners with our families. Everyone brings something and we create a theme! One week it’s Italian and the next it could be appie night or Thai. What we have discovered, is we are all so incredibly happy! We laugh our faces off playing games with the kids, cooking, enjoying each others company. Since we have all started doing this, the feeling is the same. We feel so much more satisfied and happy knowing we have the time we’ve been seeking out!! Our kids seeing us laugh has been the best part!

Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
I am the happiest person on the planet it seems. I am always laughing and joking around, but when it comes time to get things done, I’m your girl. I don’t get people that don’t laugh. I research (sometimes too much) everything. Google is sometimes my best friend and I’ve discovered there’s not much that you cannot learn through the world wide web. I love to take advantage of the many learning opportunities of the world and learning is a favourite past time.
