You’ve heard her words, but have you heard of her name? Nina Mariah Donovan’s poem “Nasty Woman” was performed by Ashley Judd in front of 500,000 people at the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. We wanted to learn more about Nina, so we asked her 9 questions ranging from her poetry inspiration to her morning routine.
When did you first start writing poetry?
I’ve always been interested in writing, but I was first exposed to Spoken Word when I was a freshman in high school. I didn’t get serious with it until Junior year of high school though, as that was when I really started competing in higher level poetry slams.
What inspired you to begin writing poetry?
I just really love the therapy of it all. I get such an adrenaline rush from performing and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my chest when I put my feelings on paper and into a mic. I just remember feeling so empowered after hearing a slam poem for the first time, and even more empowered after performing my own.
A recent FML moment that you overcame?
I am the queen of procrastination, so I always find myself up at 2 am scrambling to finish assignments with usually an hour to spare. But I usually end up pulling through and I just continue to put all my passion into it until I’ve created something I’m satisfied with being graded on.
An empowered boss moment?
I wrote this poem about Jennifer Lopez, and she ended up posting it all over her social media and I definitely cried and still fangirl over it.
Advice you wish you knew at 12 years old?
Your fake middle school friends and middle school bullies are going to be some of the most irrelevant people later on in life. YOU WILL THRIVE AND THEIR OPINIONS WILL BE FORGOTTEN 😭💕
What’s your spirit animal and why?
I haven’t really thought much about this, but I do know my zodiac sign is represented by a scorpion so I guess that?! I have this little shell and if you do me wrong you’ll definitely feel a wild sting but I really am a softie behind the shell.
Do you have a morning routine / how do you incorporate healthy living throughout your day?
I reflect on my day or even my feelings (and life I guess) before I go to bed and as soon as I wake up. I always try to stay in tune with myself so I can stay better in tune with the people around me, and I always try to live in a deeper understanding of the world I am living in.
What’s in your bag / purse?
My purse is usually a mess consisting of packets of different types of sugar, Taco Bell hot sauce, panty liners, pens, Indian money, and coupons.
