Janne Robinson is a 21st-century feminist beat poet. . Her poetry leads like a woman, walking with fire in the footprints of Steinem—breathing sexual liberation, choice, and overall championing women to their birthright of not only equality but leadership.
Robinson notoriously states that her career is to “share slabs of her heart for a living.” Her ability to capture the human experience with unrefined sincerity makes her an incredible force in the modern landscape of personal expression.
She is an outrageous idealist and master at effortlessly marrying the life she wishes to live with her work, and this enrages and inspires many who believe they are trapped.
Janne is very much so crowning at the beginning of what is and will be a triumphant career, and she has begun so with the hearts of millions indebted and watching as it is rare to stumble upon a woman who makes revolution nature. We had the chance to ask Janne a few questions!
Your poetry is amazing. When did you start writing and what was the inspiration?
In Grade 3. I wrote a story about a hamster with three wishes. I have always been writing–punk song lyrics, short stories, poems in Grade 4 that rhymed, like cat-sat-fat-rat. The words have always, always been there. Just the last 5 years have I started to publish it online. Life is my inspiration, words are the inspiration. They were always there without anything to be inspired by.
What advice would you give your 12 year old self?
Don’t try. Find what connects you to spirit and let it burn. Invest in well being and self care above all else–the body heals the mind and this world so often doesn’t feed the beast of their spirit, just their bank accounts. This is detrimental to happiness and joy–do it different than anyone else. Start meditating and doing yoga now. Start playing more, now. And never stop.
Do you have a recipe for self care? What is it?
I surf 2-3 hours a day. Sleep 8 hours a night. Drink lots of water. Eat food that my body wants–right now no gluten, dairy, sugar, and coffee only 1-2 times a week. Yoga 1-2 a week. I work weekly with coaches for my emotional and spiritual well being as well.
What’s your spirit animal and why?
I did a drum journey with my mother, who has dabbled in shamanism–my central power animal is a Cougar. When she did the journey I was living alone in a cabin on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Cougars are creatures of solitude. I moved to the coast and new 3 people at this time, I was alone. They are also courageous, and I share slabs of my heart with this world for a living which might not be seen as the physical might and strength of a cougar, but heart might is courage–maybe even a greater one.
#WCW – Tell us a woman that inspires, that you think we should talk to next and why?
Sylvia Mercedes, owner of Zaleska Jewelry. Her necklaces have been my healing and my life at certain moments in my life. When I was grieving I wore a labrodite necklace she made–it was my armour. Labrodite is the fuck off stone–it keeps other peoples energy out and yours in. She is based in Vancouver, BC and is a not only a budding business woman but is also thriving. She is magic. I love how she sees this world and what she creates from that place. She is also a phenomenal painter! She is a brilliant kinesethic and visual creator.
